Tulfarris is located on a large site not far from Blessington and boasts lovely views over the Poulaphuca Lake. The lake itself is an integral part of the course, which was designed by renowned Irish architect Patrick Merrigan. In short, this is a gorgeous location, and one matched by the quality of the golf course.

The first in Tulfarris is a very good hole and the pressure is on straight away with water on the left and trees on the right. The second is a shortish par 3 with water short and left, and accuracy is required. I remember a feeling of relief standing on the third teebox, which is a difficult hole itself, but at least you can open the shoulders and not worry about losing your ball.

Fairway woods trying to reach in two, mid irons running balls up to greens, shorter irons holding greens, unusual situations cropping up in the round trying to improvise, wide variety of shots played from 50 yards and less - and that's before you start talking about the greens. On most of the greens 5 footers are missable and 30 footers are quite makeable.. you get rewarded for good puts and punished for misreads or poor strokes. They really are hugely enjoyable.

It's not Kerry scenery, but it is generally gorgeous and the design of the course offers up the best views possible around the lake.

There are great shot-making opportunities throughout the course, but there are only about 4 holes that you walk away from saying "that was a great hole". The most noticeable weakness in the round is the run of 3 easy holes on the front nine. 3 of the easiest 4 or 5 holes on the course are back to back. I'd say it's a good design that would take just a little bit of time and work to transform the course to the next level. My gut feeling from the place is they don't have the cash to splash to achieve its potential.

In my opinion conditioning is the major issue in Tulfarris, as evidenced by my score. I love the course and I think it has so much potential, but I have to make that point.

You're doing well if you don't lose a ball in Tulfarris. I can imagine low handicappers shooting low to their handicap and high handicappers shooting high to their's, so I would penalise the playability also.

All things considered, I would rank Tulfarris as great fun and a top 75 course.
