I'd never played this course before and I was pleasantly surprised.. not an ugly sister course at all! It actually reminds me a lot of Dooks in Kerry. Whereas this course has more of a championship feel than Dooks, it doesn't have the same wow factor. Both courses have a stretch of two consecutive boring holes, and for Portmarnock Links this is the first two. Both courses are also very slightly cramped in places. But there are some tremendous holes and the views of Ireland's Eye and Lambay are spectacular if you climb up a dune to see them. I love the combination of difficulty from both the exposure of the course and its true links experience which is balanced by great openness across the course that keeps the playability very high. Out of all the courses that are comfortably less than an hour's drive from my house, this is probably in my Top 5.

what a great present to receive for xams. open singles on st stephens day.....with a cloudy head and a heavy frost we arrived to the links to play to find a severe frost on the ground . any way we teed off about 15 minutes late which was nothing considering the frost. the starter was very pleasent and informative of conditions/ yardage.the first 3 greens were frozen solid which made it a bit difficult to chip and put. very quickly the frost went and we had a proper links day. the wind got up and we had to shape shots alot due the shape of holes and the wind.considering we played in 4 balls we were just under 4 hours going around which was good. over all a great day out

A nice challenging course which definitely rewards good shots and punishes poor shots. Greens in very good condition with plenty of punishing run offs.
