The course at the Island twists its way through and around some spectacular, rugged terrain and is about as natural a links as you will find anywhere. Over a century old and located among some of the biggest dunes you'll find on a golf course, the Island has been developed by some great architects and it is still timeless links golf at its best.

My first time playing The Island and it's a thrilling experience driving along the coast to the club, which is in a superb spot for a golf course. A difficult but exhilarating links course, I think the closest comparison I could make is to The European. In my opinion The Island is not quite as well designed as Pat Ruddy's controversial masterpiece, but then again it doesn't have the same level of playability issues.

The major strengths of the course are
- The enjoyability of the walk around the course which fits beautifully on the land
- The incredible shot making options available. The bigger your arsenal of shots and the better your reading of links courses, the more you will love this course.
- The condition is generally outstanding with perfect bunkers. There are areas just off a couple of greens where the ground is clearly too hard, but aside from that the condition is difficult to fault.
- The scenery is spectacular.

The weaknesses of the course are
- The front 9 is short of world class in my opinion. For example, 8 consecutive par 4s is not how I like to start my round.
- The green and red tees are too difficult in places. For example the 13th and 14th are great holes for great golfers, but 13 is unsuitable for anyone who isn't a long hitter (186m to the front from the red tees, most likely with a swirling wind blowing!) and 14 is unsuitable for anyone who isn't gun barrel straight (the narrowest playable area I can remember seeing in Ireland). They are the most dramatic examples of a recurring theme where the course plays too difficult for 18+ handicappers, which is a significant percentage of golfers.

One small gripe I have with the current rating of The Island at 14 is that it's a full 5 spots ahead of Killeen Castle. Do I think the set of 18 holes in Donabate are as collectively memorable as the 18 in Dunshaughlin. The reader can probably guess the answer.

Great golf course. Has stood the test of time. From the first to the last hole this is links golf. Every tee box you stand on has a different challenge. Good course management is essential. The 13th hole par 3 at 210 yds is challenging but when you stand on the 14th tee box spare a thought for the great players who have stood here over the years. It must be one of the narrowest fairways anywhere in golf. Water hazard all down the right and a high bank down the left. Truly one of the most difficult tee shots but if you do hit something decent you are rewarded with a short iron to the green. Definitely one of the finest Links courses in the country.
