This is links golf at its best, with only the muted murmur of a ship's engine to break the sounds of nature, as it quietly winds its way up river to the port.

I played this course back in July and it was a fantastic test of golf. The fairways were hard and the greens were very fast, this made it a severe test of short game skills. Accuracy off the tee is crucial at Baltray; some big numbers could be recorded for those who can't hit the fairways off the tee, conditions were such in July that irons could be used off most tees. It is a course that rewards good shots, there aren't any quirks or gimmicks, I particularly enjoyed the par 3 holes, they were very challenging yet of modest yardage (17th apart). The 14th is a classic hole from start to finish, the tee shot is often spoken about but for me the undulating green is equally impressive. This is not a course for high handicappers, or those not on their 'A' games!
